Shifting Consumer Habits. Are you Ready Mr./Ms. Merchant?

Emerging new consumer behaviors foretell the need for a higher level of sophistication for merchants. Currently 4.6% of the shopping revenue is on mobile devices. Of that 4.6%, fully 89% is from iPad users with 7% from other mobile and 4% of iOS. Forecasts call for the mobile commerce to grow at a 47% annual rate.

At a 47% annual growth rate, and a 0.00% growth rate in non-mobile online shopping, then mobile shopping in the next six years could grow to 46% of the U.S. shopping. Is it possible for non-shopping to not grow over the six years? The point is, merchants today had better learn how to deliver the shopping experience online AND mobile to remain competitive and relevant. Value chains will need to be examined and adaptable to shifting behaviors. This is the beauty of Porter’s Value Chain Framework.
